I replaced my previous HP 2600n with this unit which was on sale (one day at Frys) for less than a full set of replacement ink for the HP! The HP also used a proprietary protocol and the Linux drivers couldn’t do a very good job with colour.
The CLP-610ND supports PCL5 & 6 which are pretty much open standards. Ubuntu had no problem finding the printer, picking a driver and providing all the features including duplex and 3 print quality settings. If you have a less recent Linux version then it may be detected as the CLP-610 (ie no duplex) but you can download a PPD from LinuxPrinting.org which will give all the functionality.

There is a technique known as cold resetting. It basically will set all your HP printer settings to the factory default levels. It is important to note that any settings made at the control panel of your printer are going to be reset. Hence, in case you happen to have a JetDirect card then even the IP address will be reset to the factory defaults. You can try to reset NVRAM. To do this, switch off your HP printer and then hold down the ‘Go’ key for around 20 seconds while switching the printer back on again.

For a low cost basic laser printer, you should consider the Samsung ML 1510B printer. Even though it cannot print colors, its monochrome output is of a high quality and it can print grayscale images too. Available at low prices, its a great deal for an entry level printer. It has a very decent printing speed and operates very quietly. It can easily accommodate all the standard paper sizes and media types.
With dimensions of 34.8 cm wide, 35.5 cm high and only 19.3 cm deep, this is not a large printer so it will not take up much space. It is great to use as a personal printer and you could use it for small office operations if you wanted to. It weighs only 7 Kg.
