HP has not made a full featured factory driver for the 6940 (Complain to support, and maybe…?!).
Win 7 auto-installs a generic driver that works ok for basic printing “only”.

This prints High Quality, and I’d definitely recommend getting it!
All-in-one printers, are a waste of money for most! I prefer a separate scanner, that have lasted me for years! Epson Perfection V30 Color Scanner (good cheap scanner!)

There was no Ink level bubble showing when I printed (works on my XP system/ with downloaded driver), and no toolbox to troubleshoot?

Once you go and buy the HP F380 you have a bright ahead of you. This all in one can do all the things you’ve had on your to do list, but weren’t able to do.       The ink is cheap because it occupies only 85 pages (per box). I go through so much ink on this thing is unreal! I always go to the store to buy more.
